Check your attic rafters or the underside of the wood decking. If you see dark spots or a fuzzy growth, it means moisture is trapped. In our humid Nebraska summers, a lack of airflow turns your attic into a greenhouse, rotting your roof from the inside out.
If your shingles look brittle or the edges are turning up, they are being baked. High attic heat cooks the asphalt in both 3-tab and architectural shingles, causing them to lose the protective granules that shield your home from the sun.
After an Omaha blizzard, keep an eye on your gutters. If you see thick blocks of ice, it’s a sign that heat is escaping your attic and melting the snow on the roof, which then refreezes at the cold eaves. This forces water up under your shingles and into your walls.
If your A/C is running non-stop but your house still feels warm, your attic might be holding onto 150°F heat. Proper ventilation allows that heat to escape naturally, taking the pressure off your HVAC system and saving you money every month.
